The student must go through a series of courses designed to prepare the student for the knowledge that he or she will need to apply to veterinary school. As with med school, this is where a person learns the diseases and conditions that he or she will come across when he or she starts working for a private practice. When he completes his pre-veterinary studies, he must apply to a school that teaches veterinary medicine. This is an additional four year program and the competition to get into these schools is high. Only about one out of every three applicants gets accepted. This due to the number of schools staying roughly the same, and an increased interest of people who want to go into the field. After he earns his veterinary degree, he must complete a one-year internship.
