Because the city of Pondicherry (since 2006 officially known as 'Puducherry') is the former capital of French India, a collection of enclave territories dotted around the southern coast of the Indian subcontinent that now make up the Union Territory of Pondicherry. Captured by the French East India Company in 1759, they remained under French rule until 1952 when they were ceded to the Indian Union. As the colonial community left when the territory was handed over and the majority of Francophile citizens accepted French citizenship and subsequently emigrated, very few people in former French India actually speak French anymore however it is still taught in some schools.
