Because the church is still growing it is hard to give an exact figure. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the 'Mormon' church) reports just over 14 million baptized members as of January 2012, but there is no public record of how many Mormons there have been in history since the Church was founded in 1830.

Who is the 'bride of Christ'?

Those who truly believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, Gave his life as payment for our sin and was raised from the dead are collectively known as The Church. The Church will be joined with Christ during " End Times" in a symbolic wedding that will link Christ to His " Bride" ( The Church) for eternity. This is my understanding of the scriptures found in the book of Revelation concerning the Bride of Jesus Christ. Hope this helps.

How did mormonism become a religion?

In 1820, Joseph Smith was a teenage boy living in upstate New York. The area was experiencing a major religious revival, called by historians the Second Great Awakening. Many members of his family had joined different local churches, and he wanted to join one as well. After studying the Bible, he decided he should ask God which church was right. One day, he went into the woods near his home to pray. As he began to pray, he claims that God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him and told him that none of the churches were totally true. They told him that true New Testmament Christianity would be restored to the earth through him. Over the next 10 years, Joseph was visited by many angels and heavenly beings who taught him the gospel of Christ and restored to him the authority to lead God's church, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly nicknamed the "Mormon" church) was officially founded on April 6, 1830. What religion was Joseph Smith before he formed the Mormon Church?

Joseph Smith did not belong to any church before organizing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) in 1830. He and his family were raised in a good Christian home and often prayed and read the Bible together. They attended services with several congregations in their area, including Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, Unitarians, and Congregationalists. Joseph never joined any of these churches because he didn't fully agree with their doctrines and did not like how they all contradicted each other.

What religion did the LDS church split off from?

None! The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" Church) is a Restorationist Church, not a Protestant Church. This means that they believe that true Christianity was restored to them by God Himself. They did not break off from another Church. Joseph Smith, Jr., the first leader of the Church, had never officially joined another religion. As a child he had studied with various churches in his area, including the Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterians. When he was 14 he wanted to join a church but didn't know which one to choose. He prayed to God to ask which one to join, and was answered by a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ telling him not to join any church because they had all gone astray from the truth. He later received direction on how to organize the true Christian Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first members of the LDS Church (Joseph's family, friends, and neighbors) all came from different denominations. Some were Presbyterian, some were Methodist, some were Baptist, some were Unitarian, some were Congregationalist, and some weren't religious at all. Why was the Mormon religion made?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) began due to a young boy's prayer. In 1820, Joseph Smith was 14 years old. He lived in an area of New York that was experiencing a huge religious revival. Some of his family had joined a Presbyterian Church, some were attending a Methodist Church, and his father had met a couple times with a Unitarian Church. Joseph wanted to join a church, but didn't know which one he should join. After studying the Bible to find an answer, he came to James 1:5, which says that if anyone lacks wisdom, they should ask God. Joseph went to the woods near his home to pray - to ask God which church he should join. As he began praying, he saw "a pillar of light... which descended gradually until it fell upon [him]." In that light he "saw two Personages." One of these called him by name and said, "This is my Beloved Son. Hear Him." Joseph asked these personages which church he should join. God the Father and Jesus Christ answered him by saying that he should "join none of them, for they were all wrong" and was told that he would receive further instruction later. Throughout the next decade, Joseph was visited and taught by angels and Biblical prophets, who restored to him the full and pure Gospel of Jesus Christ, as well as the authority to preach that Gospel. Moroni, a Book of Mormon prophet, showed him the place where ancient plates were buried. Joseph was able to translate these plates by the power of God, and they were published as the Book of Mormon. Following the publication of the Book of Mormon, the first official meeting of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was held on April 6, 1830. So, I suppose the short answer is because God the Father and Jesus Christ directed Joseph Smith to do so. You can learn more about this story at the "Related Links" below.

How many people have joined the Mormon church from 1830 to 2012?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) has never released statistics about how many people have joined the church in history, they only release how many members they have in January of each year. I would estimate the number is about 50 millon, but this is just a guess.

Why did some Mormons join the Mormon Battalion?

In the 1980's? The Church of Latter-Day Saints was created in the 1830's. Answering the questions why Joseph Smith created the church is kind of tricky. If you are a believer in the church then you would probably say that Joseph Smith created it because he was divinely inspired by a vision and was given the Book of Mormon; if you don't believe in it then you probably assume Joseph Smith created the church for selfish reasons or simply had an illness which caused him to think he had a vision and completely fabricate the Book of Mormon. The above answer is a very good summary of why he created the church. I will only add to what the person had said. Joseph was confused of to which sect to join so he asked the Lord, that's when he got his inspiration to restore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church had once existed in ancient times, to find out more I suggest you ask a local member, maybe a friend. * Smith and the Methodists It is interesting to note that as early as 1828 members of the Methodist Church were forced to make a decision with regard to Joseph Smith. Smith had taken steps to join their church, but they felt his dealings in witchcraft made him unfit to be a member. * The Mormon Prophet Attempts to Join the Methodists By Wesley P. Walters In June 1828 Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of Mormonism, joined the Methodist Church [probationary class] in Harmony, Pennsylvania. This was a strange thing for this prophet of a new religion to do, and seriously challenges the story he put out ten years later about the origin of his work.

How did the Mormons begin?

The beginnings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) lie in a simple prayer given by a 14 year old boy, Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith lived in upstate New York at a time when different Christian religions were very active in trying to increase membership. Some of his family was attending a Presbyterian congregation, and others a Methodist congregation. He could not decide which one to attend, and so retired to the woods near his home to pray, with the intention of asking God which church he should join. As he said his prayer, a light descended upon him, and within the light he saw two personages - God the Father and Jesus Christ. One of the personages addressed Joseph by name and said "This is my Beloved Son, hear Him!" The other personage told Joseph that he should not join any of the churches, and that the full truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ had been lost from the earth. They explained that he would receive further instruction at a later date, and left. Over the next decade, Joseph Smith recived visits from various angels and Biblical leaders, such as Moses, John the Baptist, Peter, James, and John the Revelator, who taught him the parts of the Gospel that had been lost and ordained him to the ancient Priesthood Authority. He also received direction as to where to find an ancient record engraved on metal plates near his home. This record was translated by the power of God into what is now called "The Book of Mormon." It was published in the early months of 1830. On April 6, 1830, the first official worship service of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was held, with about 30 in attendance. Since that time, the Church has grown to nearly 14 million members worldwide. You can learn more about this story of how the 'Mormons' came to be at the "Related Links" below.

What caused Mormonism?

The "Mormonism" movement and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were caused by the confusion felt by a young teenage boy.In 1820, 14 year old Joseph Smith lived in what has been called the 'burned over district' in upstate New York. The area was experiencing a religious revival, and preachers from every denomination had come in hopes of winning converts. Different members of Joseph's family had joined different churches - some Presbyterian, some Methodist, some Unitarian - and Joseph wanted to join a church too. Joseph was very concerned about joining the true church, and was confused when each denomination claimed to be the one true Christian church. Joseph took to studying the Bible, where he read in James 1:5 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God." Joseph determined to do this, and set out to a grove of trees near his home with the intention of asking God which church he should join. As Joseph said his prayer, he "saw a pillar of light exactly over my head... which descended gradually until it fell upon me." In this light he "saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air." These Personages introduced themselves as God the Father and Jesus Christ. They then "answered that I must join none of them" and explained that no church contained the whole truth. (quotes from Joseph Smith-History) Over the next decade, Joseph received several visits from angels and Biblical figures, who restored to him the doctrines and authority of the New Testament Christian Church. One angel, Moroni, showed him the place where an ancient American record was buried. The record described people who left Jerusalem during the time of Jeremiah and traveled to the American continent in order to avoid the foretold destruction and captivity, and to whom Jesus Christ appeared to following His crucifixion. Joseph translated this record from the ancient language by the power of God and it was published in English in March 1830 as the Book of Mormon. In April 1830, a 24 year old Joseph Smith officially organized the Church of Christ - later renamed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is the official beginning of the Mormonism movement.
