I don't have the numbers for greater Houston, but here are the 2010 census totals of the state and its #1, #2, #3 and #5 cities:

  • Texas (#2 in state pop.): 25,145,561
  • Houston (#1 city pop. in TX; #4 in US): 2,099,451
  • San Antonio (#2 in TX; #7 in US): 1,327,407
  • Dallas (#3 in TX; #9 in US): 1,197,816
  • Fort Worth (#5 in TX; #16 in US): 741,206

Subtracting those four city populations from the state pop. leaves 19,779,681. If you also subtract the population of Austin (#4 in TX; #14 in US), that leaves 18,989,291. So only 24.5% of the state population lives within its five most populous cities.

I DO have the census totals by county. If you subtract the 11,008,671 people who live in Texas' five largest counties, Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar and Travis, which are the counties that hold the five largest cities but not in the same order, from the state population, the difference is 14,136,890.
