Hundreds of thousands of immigrants came to Australia for the goldrushes in the mid 1800s. At the beginning of the goldrush, in 1851, Australia's population was about 430,000. Twenty years later, in 1871, the population had trebled to 1.7 million. This was an increase of 1.27 million.
Many people struck rich in the early stages of the Gold Rush. The numbers are not officially upheld but there estimates of 200-300 people.

Many peoe did not take much convincing. Newspapers around the world ran the headlines about the "new" Australian goldrush (as opposed to the Californian goldrush which, by then, had disillusioned many). Stories of just being able to reach down and scoop handfuls of alluvial gold nuggets from the surface abounded, and people were gullible enough to believe them.
