The ruins of Babylon are not a tourist site. They were damaged in recent times.
In 1983, Saddam Hussein started rebuilding the city on top of the old ruins. Part of this was restoration and part was new construction. Later he built a palace in the shape of a ziggurat over some of the ruins and called it it Saddam Hill. In 2003 he wanted to build of a cable car line over site, but this was interrupted by the Gulf War.
The US Army built Camp Alpha, a military base, on the site causing irreparable damage to the archaeological record. Parts of the site were levelled to create a landing area for helicopters, and parking spaces for military for vehicles. The vehicles crushed the brick pavements. More than 12 trenches were dug. Nine moulded brick figures of dragons at the ancient city gate were damaged. Archaeological fragments were scattered.
