The Crusades. There were many Crusades, but the main aim was to rid the Holy Land of Turks, who the Emperor of Constantinople did not like. The Pope was looking for a reason to create a super-power, and then the Emperor sent him a letter complaining about the Turks, so the Pope decided to take advantage of the opportunity. So many people decided to go because the Pope promised that if they went, they would definitely have a place in Heaven.
