Exact number of personnel is unknown, but the bombings were carried out by B-29 bomers of the 509th Heavy Bombardment Group. Three B-29s flew for each bombing, and a B-29 normally carried a crew of eleven, but there were many more in the entire group, and for a few years after the war the 509th was the only nuclear-armed bomber unit in the world.
