The European Commission reported that Haiti's government estimates the Jan. 12, 2010 earthquake killed 200,000 people.
On February 5, Haiti's Prime Minister told CNN that 212,000 Haitians had died in the quake.
On February the 9th, the Haitian Government again raised the estimate of the total number of deaths to 230,000 (reported by The Associated Press - see link).
In addition, more than 250,000 people were injured and 2 million are homeless in the nation of 9 million.

This was due to movement of the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault that caused a sudden release of stored energy in the form of seismic waves. 2 people were injured in the Christchurch earthquake. There was one death. The person died from a heart attack although no one knows if the heart attack was caused by the earthquake or not.
