There were approximately 500,000 people living in Nanking when the Japanese attacked. Over 300,000 civilians were killed by the Japanese in brutal ways that even the Nazis living in Nanking at the time were horrified. During the Rape of Nanking, Chinese were not the only target; Americans and other nationalities suffered under the Japanese. They Japanese raided Nazi properties, even stomped on their flags, considering that Japan and Germany were allies at that time. They treated Americans especially barbaric (not as inhuman as they did to the Nanking civilians of course), they spit on, burned, defiled American flags, and treated Americans as if they were enemies, but USA did not enter the war until the December of 1941.
