The only warning you will get is there will be no cold air. Once the freon is low, if you turn on the AC and look at the clutch on the compressor and it doesnt cycle on and off you need to add freon. Usually one can of freon will get you up and cooling if you catch it soon. If not add a little more while the car is running and keep checking the air coming out. Now heres the thing, if you lost freon you have a leak. It could be a slow one,like I have had for many years. I just add a can to a can and a half each summer and it works fine. Otherwise take it to a A/C repair shop,but be prepared for a hefty bill.
Dont put more than two cans in or you may damage the compressor if you dont know what you are doing.
