Five American Presidents had beards at the time they took office. However, 16 of the 44 Presidents have sported some form of facial hair, from mutton chops to moustaches to Harry S. Truman's goatee.

None of the presidents who wore beards in office had red ones. Washington, Jefferson and Van Buren all had red or reddish hair and probably had facial hair of similar color if they let it grow, although all were old enough to be "gray-beards" by the time they were President.
