Eight men were appointed to serve one-year terms as president under the Articles of Confederation. The first was John Hanson, in 1781. His exact title was the "President of the United States in Congress Assembled.

∙ 12y agoYes. There were ten presidents (presiding officers) of the Continental Congress. However, the executive branch had not yet been established so the term of office varied. The president was elected in and from the Congress, and was largely a ceremonial position with little or no authority.
The first congressional officer to serve as president under the Articles (1781) was Samuel Huntington, who had already been serving since 1778. When the Articles established a one-year (maximum) term, the first elected president was John Hanson.
