There are many different cultures in South Africa due to the great multiracial population. That is partly due to the slave trade and coloniasm past of South Africa. The majority cultures however, are composed of the traditional African tribes which are collectively from the Bantu clan that migrated from North Africa many centuries if not millenia ago. The Bantu sub-tribes include:

  • Zulu
  • Xhosa
  • Ndebele
  • Sotho
  • Venda
  • Pedi
  • Tsonga
  • Tswana
  • Swati
  • Lemba
  • Pondo

And more.
There are also the indigenous cultures known as the Khoi-San cultures. The Khoi-San people are believed to be the oldest surviving tribe in the world pre-dating early human civilisations. They include two main tribes:
  • Khoi-Khoi
  • San

Smaller cultures include the general white, Malay and coloured population of South Africa. The white population is descended from the colonialist Dutch and British forces that entered South Africa around th 18th century. The White population is divided into:
  • The Afrikaner
  • English

The coloured and Malay cultures are very similar due to inter-racial marriages since they were both classified under the same race group during the Apartheid regime and therefore were placed together under the Group Areas act. The cultures differ more with the Christian and Muslim practises among these groups and therefore we have:
  • Christian Coloureds
  • Muslim Coloureds and Malays

Another large culture that is in South Africa is the Indian culture. South Africa has the largest Indian population (out of India)in the world. The Indian culture dominates large areas of South Africa including Durban and Johannesburg CBD. South African Indians have been in South Africa for over 6 generations. That is longer than White people have been in Canada! The Indians are divided into 2 main groups, Muslim and Hindu. The Muslim population is largely composed of Gujarati and Memmon Indians while the Hindu population is composed mailny of Hindi and Tamil Indians. Thus we have:
  • Hindu Indians
  • Muslim Indians

Recently South Africa has proved to be a haven for refugees from crippling African and Asian countries. Therefore there is a large population of:
  • Indians (from India)
  • Pakistanis
  • Zimbabweans
  • Somalis
  • Nigerians
  • Egyptians
  • Iraqis
  • Bangladeshis
  • Nepalis
  • Ghanaians
  • Ethiopians
  • Tunisians

And more. These have led to a mixture of new cultures arriving in South Africa.
