According to the Chicago newspapers, then-state senator Obama was very involved in his duties in the state legislature, especially on committees dealing with health care and also in law enforcement. While it is not known how many sessions of the legislature he (or anyone else) attended, his reputation for being available to his constituents and doing an effective job as a legislator led to his being elected a U.S. senator.
