I is almost impossible to tell. Of course, we know how many die in combat areas, but more people are killed in Los Angeles each year than in Iraq, for instance.
the armed forces aren't too willing for us to know how many soldiers are killed in traffic accidents, military accidents, etc. For example, a friend was a motor mac on the carrier, USS Ranger. He told me that one day, a bomb that was being loaded onto a fighter jet got loose, rolled across the deck, fell down the aircraft elevator and killed about 100 sailors.
I estimate that non-war zone military deaths add up to nearly as many as are killed in combat. I know a number of soldiers who have preferred to stay in Iraq instead of taking leave to the US, because they say the US is, "too dangerous".
