∙ 13y agoWhen Truman's advisors told him he had a choice, they let him know that the army had already built hospitals along the west coast of the US to receive over 250,000 wounded from the planned invasion of Japan... one of them was the buildings that house parts of SRI International in Menlo Park, CA. According to informal sources, the expectation was that at least that many Allied soldiers would be killed and as many Japanese soldiers and civilians. One estimate was that close to a million lives would be lost before Japan would surrender.
