Through Reconstruction and long after, even in some respects to this day, antebellum Southern life has been seen by some historians, writers, and others as a kind of noble social arrangement which, despite some flaws, should not have ended with the Civil War.
Fully 3/4 of southerners did not own slaves at the eve of the Civil War.
