Was there a radiation power plant explosion in the US?

On January 3, 1961 a nuclear reactor located at the Nuclear Reactor Testing Station, near Idaho Falls, ID, suffered a STEAM explosion while undergoing maintenance. While changing control rod motors one control rod was accidently pulled too far out of the reactor. The reactor instantly went critical, super heated the cooling water to steam, and the steam expolded. It was NOT a nuclear explosion. Three Naval personnel were killed. Two died of radiation before they could leave the building, the third was pinned to the roof by a control rod and apparently died immediately.

When was the last time US soldiers were killed in a nuclear explosion?

That depends on how you define "killed". There were US prisoners of war at Hiroshima and some of them died in the atomic bombing. Many of the US nuclear tests in the 1950s exposed soldiers to levels of radioactivity that killed them from cancers and other diseases as late as the middle 1980s.

What happens to people when a nuclear bomb explodes?

That depends upon how close the people are to the explosion, but nuclear bombs produce very powerful explosions that can kill people in large numbers. And because the explosions also produce a lot of radioactivity, even people who are not killed by the explosion may later die from radiation sickness or from cancer caused by the radiation.

What kills people in a nuclear explosion?

Most people are killed by the blast and heat as in conventional explosions. However the radioactivity adds both immediate and long term deaths (e.g. radiation poisoning, cancers). Radioactive fallout can produce deaths many hundreds of miles away from the explosion itself.

What was the biggest nuclear explosion?

The biggest nuclear explosion in history was a 50 megaton (equivalent to 50 million tons of tnt) bomb tested by the soviet union called the "Tsar Bomb". nobody was killed in the blast. the previous answer was completely false, Chernobyl was one of the smallest nuclear explosions in history, smaller than the Hiroshima bomb, which was only 17 kilotons (17 thousand tons of tnt, almost 3000 times smaller than the Tsar Bomb). People were mainly killed by the radiation. The blast didn't even kill everybody inside the actual plant (I'm not sure how many were killed in the blast, if somebody would like to add to this)
