Well you see, America and Europe vary with recognized breeds. There are 47

accepted rabbit breeds in America there might be more or less in Britain. But another thing is, there are many people that like to experiment to either try to make a new breed or accidents happen, so those mixes end up getting sold to the public as pets so you might think there are hundreds but there aren't. Hares are considered a rabbit. If you want to know all of the accepted official breeds of rabbit or cavy(which is a guinea pig) you can go here:

That's the American Rabbit Breeders Official website.

How many jack rabbits are in the world?

There is no real way to accurately answer this question. 'Jack' rabbits really aren't a species and the term generally simply refers to wild rabbits. Many different species of wild rabbits exist and are found in many countries around the world, and populations vary from place to place due to many factors such as food availability, living space, and predator density. Even coming up with a valid estimate would be difficult.

How many years have rabbits been hunt?

Rabbits have been hunted since the beginning of their existance. Rabbits are considered a 'prey species'. Herbivores by nature, fecund in their breeding, they are a viable source of protein for many species of predators, not the least, mankind. Rabbits have been hunted for as long as there have been creatures who eat meat, and there's been rabbits to be eaten.

How did rabbits come to be?

Members of the rabbit family are native to every continent in the world except Australia and Antarctica. In North America, the main types of native rabbits are the cottontails, nine species of which are found north of Mexico. The rabbits usually kept as pets, however, are domestic animals descended from European rabbits. European rabbits have been introduced to many parts of the world where they are now considered an invasive species. Their introduction has been particularly problematic in places like Australia and New Zealand, where no members of the rabbit family existed previously.
