Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States on March 4, 1861, at which point there were 33 stars on the United States flag. As of July 4 of the same year, a new flag was introduced, with 34 stars, due to Kansas being added to the union.

On the first flag of the United States there were 13 stars for the original 13 states. Many people confuse the number 13 with the original Colonies but the stars represented the original 13 states.
