Seven states seceded from the Union to join the Confederates.
There were 22 states, then Maine broke away from Massachusetts and became the 23rd state. The states in 1820 were all the one's east of the Mississippi, and Lousiana. West Virginia wasn't a state then, there was just Virginia, and Florida was controlled by Spain then.

The Confederate leaders wanted as many states as possible to join them. Whether non-slave states could join was moot, since all of the non-slave states were in favor of preserving the Union.
Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church due to his many and manifold marital problems, not to mention his unstable mental health.
