The Cumberland Gap is a narrow pass in the Cumberland Mountains, which is in the Appalachian Mountains of the the USA.
The Cumberland Pass or Cumberland Water Gap was widened by loggers under Daniel Boone to make it more accessible for pioneers into the frontier. The route was not discovered by Boone but was along used highway of the American Indians that a Virginia Doctor named Thomas Walker discovered on one of his wilderness explorations.
Built between 1811 and 1837, the National Road (Cumberland Road) connected the Potomac and Ohio valleys. It crossed the Ohio River in Wheeling, then in Virginia. The road began in Cumberland, Maryland, went west through southwestern Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, and Indiana, as far as Vandalia, Illinois.This was only about 50 miles from the present site of St. Louis, Missouri on far (west) side of the Mississippi River.
