Paul Newman smoked for approximately 28 years. He had started smoking in the early 1950s (when cigarettes were "cool") and quit smoking 30 years ago in 1978 at the age of 53. He recently died of Lung Cancer at the age of 83.

He never was in the coast guard. He died in 1980 of lung cancer from smoking 3 packs of cigarettes a day.

He probably saw that they were doing more harm than good. I'm unclear when he quit them but Paul McCartney quit when George Harrison was diagnosed with cancer; that eventually spread and led on to kill him.
