Modern nuns generally do not follow the strict regime followed by their sisters in medieval times. The night offices (matins and lauds) are now said in the evening so that nuns may enjoy a full night's sleep.

In the Middle ages, the Rule of St Benedict specified eight services for nuns and monks, starting with Matins and Lauds which would often be said together at around 2 am. The community would then go back to bed until Prime at around 6 am (the first daylight service). Other services followed at roughly 3-hour intervals.

Between these services nuns would be occupied in private study or various types of work (bee-keeping, needlework, brewing, baking, gardening, cleaning, cooking and many other tasks); every part of every day and night was strictly allocated to a a specific occupation and there was no "free time".
