In mitosis the cell divides once. The two cells, in some cases, may then divide again, but mitosis is just one cell dividing into two cells.

I've been studying meiosis and mitosis a lot in class, and if theres one thing I've learned from all this jibber jabber, it's that meiosis occurs in sexual reproduction, and mitoses ioccurs in asexual reproduction. Another difference would be the fact that during meiosis, the cell divides 2 times and ends up as 4 new cells.... During mitosis, the cell will only divide once and it will end up in 2 new cells
During meiosis, cell division is through sexual reproduction. This produces genetically different cells, under two divisions. The chromosome number is reduced by half. During mitosis, asexual reproduction during cell division creates genetically identical cells. The amount of chromosomes remain the same.

They replicate before meiosis begins, as it is the division phase. The chromosomes duplicate during interphase which is right before the beginning of meiosis. After going through meiosis I the chromosomes DO NOT duplicate nor do they cross over they simply continue on. Hope this helps. :)
