Answern addition to accepting the states of heaven and hell, Catholicism envisages a third state, called purgatory, before being admitted to heaven. According to Catholic doctrine, some souls are not sufficiently free from sin and its consequences to enter the state of heaven immediately, nor are they so sinful as to be destined for hell.

Although developed fairly early in Christianity, the concept of purgatory is not as old as the books of the New Testament and is therefore not found in the Bible. Nevertheless it is usually possible to read whatever you wish in the Bible, by making whatever assumptions may be needed. On this basis, some say that 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 is an implied reference to purgatory.

Well I accidentally flagged a response. Sorry. I intended to add that before Jesus died on the cross he uttered “ It is finished“. That’s the translation. On reality his words indicated a debt which had been paid in full. If He told the truth then the debt if sin wasn’t paid, sins forgiven leaving no room for a doctrine of Purgatory. That is if Jesus, Son if God had the authority to claim His suffering as a sin debt paid. Now, what did Jesus say about his authority? Matthew 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
