Barack Obama has been president for one term of four years. He may be elected, under the restrictions imposed by the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, for one more four year term; President Obama is running for reelection in 2012. Should he not win, he may run again in 2016 (or in any later election), as the 22nd Amendment imposes no limits on the number of times a candidate may run, only on the number of terms he may serve as president.

Barack Obama won the presidential election in 2008, defeating John McCain. He then won a second term in 2012, defeating Mitt Romney. Under US law, a president may only serve two terms (that law has been in place since 1951).

He has been elected twice, in 2008 and 2012. Under the constitution, he can only serve two terms, so at the end of his current term, he cannot run for re-election.
