While no solid numbers are available for reasons that vary like the DoD did not want to lend credence to the problem, many turned themselves in at the moment their absence without leave was changed to desertion or when their more conservative and patriotic parents convinced them to mend their ways. (In many if not most cases, turning yourself in to the US government got you a free pass on the desertion charge and nominal punishment at a non-judicial hearing.) In any case, at the highest point of the desertion crisis in 1971, the Army desertion rate had peaked at 7.35 percent. The Navy, Air Force and Marines with much higher levels of volunteers versus draftee did not suffer this fate. This rate had not been seen since the US Civil War.
