There is however, lots of colours.

The most recognised is Black And Tan, Black & White.

Other colours like Sable and Panda occur too.

German Shepherds are purebred dogs, but all purebreds are derivatives (after all purebred is man-made) , and stem from carefully breeding selective traits in other breeds until there is minimal variation in the resulting litters; some are newer than others, Doberman Pincers are a basic refinement of the Rottweiler with gene infusion from Greyhound stock, in turn the Rottweiler, Saint Bernard, and the Newfoundlander are all closely related and descendant from Mastiff stock, which is a very old breed. German Shepherds are very basic, who's ancestors would trace down to the European wolf, much like the Huskies can be traced to North American Timber Wolves, yet the Husky and German Shepherd are two very different breeds with completely different temperaments as they were genetically selected for from two very different species of wolves. German Shepherds, Alsatians, Austrian & Belgian Shepherds are all really the same type of dog, but the name "German" Shepherd became extremely unpopular and fell out of vogue particularly in Europe after WW II. German Shepherds have several different styles of markings, however the "Sable" coat is highly coveted because it has the least amount of variation.
