The Hawaii plume is responsible for the creation of the Hawaiian - Emperor seamount chain, a chain of volcanoes over 5,800 kilometres (3,600 miles) long. Four of these volcanoes are active, two are dormant, and more than 123 are extinct, many having since been ground beneath the waves by erosion as seamounts and atolls.

This gives a total of more than 129 volcanoes as the pacific plate slid over this hotshot.

Why do volcanoes erupt on islands?

It is not so much that volcanoes tend to occur on islands as much as many islands are formed by volcanoes. Subduction zones and hot spots often cause volcanoes to develop on the sea floor. Erupted material then piles up to form islands.

What are the volcano prone areas of the world?

There are many areas around the world where volcanoes reside. Most volcanoes are near plate boundaries (see "what are tectonic plates?") because this is where lava from the mantle is forced upward, to the surface. Volcanoes formed in the middle of plates are formed from "hot spots", regions where hot rock and magma are forced to the surface from deep in the mantle in tube-like formations. As plates slide across these hot spots, lines of volcanoes are formed.

Where in Hawaii was the volcano?

There are many volcanoes in Hawaii. Each island was formed by a volcano, and there are still five active volcanoes there: Loihi, Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, and Haleakala. The Hawaiian islands are moving over what is called a "hot spot" below the earth's crust, and as the tectonic plate slides over, new volcanoes are formed.

Which volcanoes are located at hot spots?

Hot spots have generated all types of volcanoes but are most often. If you mean to ask about specific volcanoes, there are too many to count, so a few groups and notable volcanoes will be listed: The volcanoes of Hawaii The volcanoes of the Canary Islands The Yellowstone supervolcano The San Francisco volcanic complex (including Sunset Crater and the San Francisco Peaks) The volcanoes of Iceland (associated with both a hot spot and a divergent plate boundary).
