Turf will grow about an inch and a half to two inches per week. Turf and lawns will put on more growth in the spring. The more you fertilize a lawn (nitrogen) the more it will grow and the more frequently you will need to mow. The healthiest lawns are maintained at 2.5 to 3 inches tall. You should not remove more than 1/3 of the blade height at any mowing. Most people mow shorter than this and as a result cause healthy weeds and weak lawns. The higher mow height allows for more turf photosynthesis and shades out more weeds. Lawns are mostly grown for ornamental purposes. In the US a perfect lawn means weed free and always green. Plenty of fertilizer companies have supported this notion. Reduce the nitrogen and start mowing at 2.5 inches. A mulching mower will put the nitrogen the plant absorbed right back in the soil. If you remove the clipping you are removing the nitrogen/nutrients.

Why would someone put sand as topsoil?

to improve drainge In the area that I live in, some people use sand as a filler to fill holes in their grass area that has been removed by erosion. It works, but is not the best thing to use. Sand has nothing to offer except volume of soil for the roots for the grass to grow in. Its just a substitute for topsoil.

Is overgrazing harmful because pants do not grow well when topsoil has been lost?

Overgrazing does not destroy topsoil so much as it decimates all the vegetation. When sheep graze they tend to snip off the grass lower to the base than cattle. This is sometimes a contributor to overgrazing, which then leaves the land bare, and then the wind and the rain blow away the topsoil. Then the result is that crops don't grow as well, it's a much more complex problem.

Why farmers want to preserve their topsoil?
