There have been twenty significant volcanic eruptions so far in the 21st century. Three major ones have occurred since 2009: Eyjafjallajokull (Iceland) in 2010, Mount Merapi which had 353 casualties in Java in 2010, and Puyehue-Cordon Caulle in Chile.
Some major volcanic eruptions since 1990 include Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991, Mount Unzen in Japan in 1991, Mount Merapi in Indonesia in 2010, Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland in 2010, and Kilauea in Hawaii in 2018. These eruptions had significant impacts on the local environment and sometimes global climate.
Mount Merapi as been in the news recently a lot due to the fact that the volcano erupted. On October 26st 2010 Indonesian volcano Mount Merapi began erupting. Since that day it has erupted three times and has thrown millions of tonnes of ash and debris high into the sky. More than 100 people have been killed as a result of the eruption and many more have been injured. 70.000 People in the near viscinity of Mount Merapi have been evacuated

Mt. Merapi is located in Indonesia, Asia. Latitude is 7.5333° S, and the longitude is 110.4333° E. Mt. Merapi is on the Northern hemisphere and is located on the Sudan Plate. Mt. Merapi is conical in shape. Mt. Merapi is the most active volcano in Indonesia. There is smoke coming out of Mt. Merapi 360 days a year. The name Merapi means Fire Mountain. On May 27 2006 Mt. Merapi erupted and killed 5,000 people and leaving 200,000 homeless. In 2010 500 hundred of people that didn’t evacuate lived 353 died. The eruption lasted for and entire week. In 1930 1,369 deaths. An eruption occurs every 1-5 years. Merapi has been active for over 10,000 years. In 1883 Mt. Merapi killed the most people it every has: 36,000 people. It has been said that the noise of the eruption can be heard in Australia.
