In the Arabian Peninsula at the time when Mohammed came to spread the message, many men had dozens of wives and it was unfair to the women because they simply could not be treated fairly. So Islam came in to make it more moderate and God knows that the most wives a man can have and be fair to all of them is 4 at a time.

∙ 10y agoThe maximum allowed number of wives for a Muslim is four not five. To have more than one wife is subject to strict conditions. The first of which is to have acceptance of former wife (or wives) and second is to treat them equally without any discrimination. This is allowed in exceptional cases. For example if your wife is life sick and can't practice sex with you or if she can't children for. Despite these examples the overwhelming majority of Muslim men prefer to continue with one wife.
