Australia started to speak English when it was 'officially' settled by the Europeans in 1788. Of course it had been settled by Aborigines for over 40,000 years. But there rights to land and language has only recently been recognised.

It was settled on the eastern part of North America. The western part of North America was not settled or explored for nearly 40 years after the initial colonies had been established.
In 1607, Jamestown was settled. In 1945, WWII concluded with VE and VJ day.
