I think you are confusing the appalling Disney adaptation with the original book. Rudyard Kiplings' version of the Jungle Book doesn't have a single storyline. It is a collection of short stories, songs, and poetry each with their own characters and in many cases unrelated stories.

Dahl attended Llandaff Cathedral School for just two years. Then from the ages of nine to thirteen he attended St. Peter's Preparatory School in Weston-super-Mare, England. He did not enjoy the school because many of the teachers were cruel and often caned the students. Dahl was good at cricket and swimming, but he performed poorly in class. One of his main hobbies was reading, and some of his favourite novelists were the adventure writers Rudyard Kipling and H. Rider Haggard.

As is the case with so many poets from different ages, the 19th-20th century English poet Rudyard Kipling was inspired to write poetry by a love of language and the inner desire to tell stories. At the same time, his overseas experiences inspired him to try to share what he had learned with those who hadn't traveled outside of their home-land. In addition, he seemed to feel a strong need to make poetic sense of the strengths and weaknesses of the British Empire.
