In Canada and the United States prison sentences of 10 or 12 years for active involvement in criminal gangs such as the Mara Salvatrucha, Mafia, the Outfit, Bandidos and the Hell's Angels, are not uncommon. Gangsterism is not taken lightly in these countries.

If you are convicted of other crimes, especially if they involve violence, kidnapping or violations of children, your sentence will probably be doubled if you are part of a known criminal organization.

While membership in some gangs probably could draw a certain amount of law enforcement attention to you, merely being a member of a gang is not unlawful. However - if you become directly involved in any unlawful activity which the gang carries out, you too could become liable for whatever criminal offense the direct perpetrator(s) or conspirators, could be charged with.

None. Actual gang membership is not illegal.

What laws they violate as members of the gang is another matter.
