The city of London (formerly Londinium) was founded by the Romans around 43 AD, was burned and then rebuilt, and became the capital of Roman Britannia in 100 AD.
However, it's habitation dates to the Bronze Age (circa 3200 BC), and mesolithic structures more than 4500 years ago have been found there.
The original walled city was abandoned for some time until "refounded" by Alfred the Great in 886 AD. The inner city (City of London) is now the smallest city in England, despite being surrounded by the largest metropolitan area in the UK.
