Matthew Fontaine Maury (January 14, 1806 - February 1, 1873) obtained an appointment to the U.S. Navy in 1825, with the help of then Senator Sam Houston. He served with the U.S. Navy until 1861, when he resigned his commission in order to serve his home state of Virginia, during the Civil War.

The former US Naval officer, Matthew Fontaine Maury was the first Confederate to be placed in charge of mining the South's waterways. Maury had an international reputation for his scientific pursuits in oceanography and navigation. It is estimated that Confederate mines sank or damaged over fifty Union navy ships.
