Only a veterinarian should prescribe medication for pets. Most vets will accept telephone calls from clients with simple questions like these at no charge.

It depends on many factors, not the least of age & physical condition of dog, & why Benadryl is being used. That should only be done under the direction of a qualified veterinarian.

How much liquid benadryl do you give a 12 pound dog?

I am a registered Vet assistant, and have been working at a vet clinic for some time. WE give liquid and pill form benadryl quite often to dogs. The rule of thumb is 1mg per pound. For example: a 25lb dog can take 25mg of benadryl. I read on a veterinarian hospital page that you were NOT supposed to give the liquid form of benadryl to dogs.

How much benadryl do I give a 4 month old puppy?

Age is not a factor when giving Benadryl to dogs. The factor is the weight of the dog. The rule is that your dog should have no more than 1mg (milligram) of Benadryl per lb (pound) of weight. So if your dog is 5lbs, that would be no more than 5mg. You should consult a vet first, however, as it is possible for dogs to be allergic to the medication.

Can you give your 20lb pug Benadryl for his seasonal allergies which are not severe?

It depends on the dosage of Benadryl (Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride (HCL)). The recommended dosage is 1-2mg per lb of the dog. So your 20lb pug would need approximately 20-40mg. The standard Benadryl tablet is 25mg. So give your dog roughly 1-1.5 Benadryl tablets every 8-12 hours as needed for symptoms.

How much Benadryl can a dog take?

If Benadryl is being given to a dog to calm it I have asked my Veterinarian the same question. He told me give the dog 1 wait 30 minutes, give another, wait 30 minutes. Keep going like this till you have the desired effect, a dog will settle down or even go to sleep before yo can over dose them. To be sure, consult a professional before you blame me for any advice I was given and have tried. : )

Will benidryl make your 13 lb dog sluggish?

It can - one of the side effects of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is lethargy or sleepiness. If this is severe, you should talk to your veterinarian about adjusting the dose.
