Timing chain.
The 2001 Ford Explorer Sport V-6 has a timing belt. Ford engines have not use a timing chain since the 1980s.
I was just quoted $700 from a mechanic who does work on the side.
In a 2008 Ford Explorer Sport Trac : The 4.0 liter Single Over Head Cam , V6 engine has ( 3 timing CHAINS ) The 4.6 liter V8 engine has ( 1 timing CHAIN to each cylinder head , so there are 2 timing CHAINS )
On a 1997 Ford Explorer : The 4.0 litre EFI , V6 engine has ( 1 ) timing CHAIN and the 4.0 litre Single Over Head Cam , V6 engine has ( 3 ) timing CHAINS
On a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac : The 4.0 liter Single Over Head Cam , V6 engine has ( 3 timing CHAINS ) The 4.6 liter V8 has ( 1 timing CHAIN to each cylinder head , so 2 CHAINS )
On a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac : The 4.0 litre SOHC , V6 engine has ( 3 timing CHAINS ) The 4.6 litre V8 engine has ( 2 timing CHAINS )
Engines that have a chain generally about 150,000 miles. Ones that have belts, 60,000 miles.

It has a timing chain.
Your 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac - 4.0 L - SOHC - V6 engine has 3 timing CHAINS - 2 chains at the front of the engine and 1 chain at the back of the engine
It has a chain. Replace when it breaks, no maintenance interval like a belt.
