The Harvard bookstore is called the Harvard Coop. The store operates as a bookstore - general interest books and fiction - as well as a textbook store. The main area sells books for retail prices, similar to what you would find at Barnes and Noble. The textbook store sells both textbooks and sourcepacks. Sourcepacks are created by professors and can sell from 100-200 dollars. Textbooks can range from 15 to 200 dollars, generally. Members of the coop receive a percentage of their purchases back, 7% in 2008. And books can be sold back at the end of the year--generally for highly depreciated prices.
Harvard was initially founded by Puritan immigrants to train more clergy. In 1636 the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony voted to form "New Colledge," also known as "the college at New Towne." In 1639 it was renamed "Harvard Colledge" in tribute to John Harvard, a clergyman who willed 400 books to the school upon his death. The university was expected to prepare young men for the ministry.
