Workers are ultimately responsible for their own work-site safety by being aware of what is going on around them and by adhering to company safety policies and practices. OSHA is the federal governmental watchdog responsible for safety oversight, standards, and enforcement. Because management retains control of the workplace, management is also responsible for the safety of its employees during the time they are engaged in employment-related activities. In the UK an employer has the primary responsibility for the safety of workers. For example: an employer is bound by regulations requiring work equipment to be safe. Risk assessments should be completed by an employer identifying all of the dangers of use of work equipment by workers, those dangers which can be eliminated with reasonable expense by the employer should be completed, consideration should be given to carelessness by workers and safeguards put in place to protect workers from their own carelessness. In the event that dangers cannot be prevented - full training and personal protective equipment should be provided by an employer.
