Most rubbish can be recycled. In a perfect world up to 100% can be recycled.

The problem is that it is not cost effective.

In other words, if it costs more to recycle than to make new, it usually will not be done.

A:The following things in your rubbish can be recycled:
  1. All clean paper and cardboard
  2. All clean glass bottles (no crockery or plates)
  3. All clean aluminum and steel cans, including clean aluminum foil
  4. Most other kinds of clean scrap metal
  5. Many kinds of clean plastic bottles (separate and include the lids) (depends on your local recyclers)
  6. Many kinds of clean plastic containers and food trays (depends on your local recyclers)

All organic rubbish (food scraps and garden waste), (including paper and cardboard contaminated with food, like Pizza boxes) can be separated and composted or biodegraded to produce methane (natural gas).

So if you recycled properly your rubbish bin would contain

  1. plastic film
  2. plastic grocery bags
  3. polystyrene (styrofoam)
  4. plastic clothing and material like vinyl, nylon, polyester etc
  5. dirty baby nappies (some can be used as biofuel)

There is about 1 ton per family in a year.

In 1960 only 6.4% of trash was recycled, in 2000 53.3% of trash was recycled, however, we must improve recyclng eforts and reduce our total waste generation to cope with the increasing burden on landfills and the planet.
