It made Americans suffer because the two towers got destroyed. Their were over 1000 American people in those towers. That was very tragic for the families that had to endure that.

There were 2,996 deaths all up with 19 of these being hijackers and 2,977 being victims. Of the victims 246 were on the planes that were used for the attacks, 2,606 were within and around the World Trade Towers and 125 in the Pentagon.
Somewhat of a loaded question since technically the entire population of the United States minus 2,977 people survived the attacks by either escaping the buildings or simply being nowhere in the area.
