I got my first cell phone in 1993 or 1994, just around the time "everybody" got one, and the prices here in Northern Europe were pretty much the same as today - you signed a one year contract for the service and could get the cheapest models for as little as 1 USD after subsidies. (If anything, cell phones have become more expensive in those 15 years, the $1 phones don't exist anymore. Probably because the service has become cheaper, so there is less room for subsidies.)
Just five or six years earlier, say 1987, you would have to pay the equivalent of 3000 USD for a "mobile" phone you could install in a car, and even more for one you could hold in your hand.
Although the first hand held cell phone equivalent was available in 1973 it still weighed a kilogram (2 pounds) and was not anything but an expensive oddity. Prior to this the typical mobile phone was usually in an automobile and was used by people such as realtors who enjoyed being out of the office and still be able to contact clients without finding a payphone or returning to home base. Before that time the mobile phones were more like walkie talkies and were used by emergency services and police.
As a point of interest April 3, 1973, the first-ever cell phone call was made by Martin Cooper, a senior engineer at Motorola. He was in New York City and phoned a rival at another telecom company to rub in the fact that the call was coming from "a 'real' cellular telephone,

Cell phones did not exist in 1973. However, in the comic strips Dick Tracy did have his wrist TV and radio, which in fiction had many of the same functions as a modern cell phone.
