however much they want! they don't even have to read, they don't even have to celebrate! when a boy turns 13 on his Hebrew birthday he is automatically considered a member of the Jewish comunity and can be held reaspondsable for his actions in the eyes of the community and the eyes of HaShem
you read from the Torah in the synagogue. and then you have a after party
The Torah and Haftorah
They read from the Torah for the very first time.
After a girl's Bat Mitzvah, or a boy's Bar Mitzvah, they can then lead the congregation in prayer, and read directly from the Torah scroll.
The Torah is read in the afternoon on Sabbath, Yom Kippur, and public fast days. If a Bar Mitzvah is being highlighted at one of those services, then the Torah is read. Technically, a Bar Mitzvah in and of itself would not be a reason to read the Torah at a service where it wouldn't otherwise be read.
The Jewish boys are required to stay in the synagogue for at least 1 day after their bar mitzvah. They are also noticed as an adult in the Jewish religion. at a bat mitzvah, the Jew had to read out of the Torah. it used to be only boys who have a bat mitzvah, esp. in the orthodox branch.
1. Bar Mitzvah is for 13-year-old boys 2. Bat Mitzvah is for 12- or 13-year old girls They read Hebrew passages from the Torah and Haftorah. They also give speeches on how they feel about their religious passage into adulthood. The rabbi blesses them and they have parties.
The same things boys have to do for their Bar Mitzvah: 1. Read from the Torah 2. Read from the Haftorah 3. Write a speech on her Torah portion 4. Write what it means to her to be a Jewish adult 5. Receive special blessings from the rabbi
Yes of course they have them, girls enter bat mitzvah at the age of 12 instead of 13 (like a boy would). However, for a girl, it's called a bat, not a bar. Bat means daughter in Hebrew while bar means son in Aramaic.
The Bar Mitzvah ceremony normally takes place in the synagogue on a Saturday morning when the weekly Torah portion is read.
The Torah is read publicly during the synagogue service on the morning of every Sabbath and festival. It is also read during the service on every Monday and Thursday morning, and in the afternoon on the Sabbath. When a boy becomes Bar Mitzvah, the occasion may very well be celebrated during a synagogue service at which the Torah is read. In that event, the Bar Mitzvah boy may likely participate in the reading. The normal procedure won't be altered on account of the celebration.
The phrase is 'bat mitzvah'. Bat mitzvah, which means 'daughter of mitzvah' is what a Jewish girl is called on her 12th birthday. This means that she is considered ready to take on the religious responsibilities of a Jewish adult. This is often accompanied by a religious ceremony that is referred to as the bat mitzvah ceremony.
