The top soil. the decaying material is called humus (NOT hummus!).
This question is highly arguable. I would look to notes/book for specific answer to answer this without argument, but you can argue a lot. Most of this region is Pierre Shale. Though "Top layer" would equate to soil, which is ambiguous. it is a mixture of Pierre shale detritus and organic material (what makes it essentially soil)... (if this is intro Geology this is still true, but look to your book for the answer because they don't want the real one). Soil, is not dirt, which is not detritus. If I haven't helped, google those 3 and you can argue your case if it comes to that.

An acre furrow slice is the volume of soil in an acre at 6-7" depth. One AFS weighs 2,000,000 lbs. The depth is based on the depth old farmers used to till their fields at.

A cubic yard of topsoil, if compacted to get the air pockets out will weigh more than 1 tone. If the topsoil is loose, a cubic yard of it could weigh about 1 ton. A lot depends on the topsoil, and whether it has more stone dust or less in it. The more moist the topsoil is, the more likely it will weigh more than a ton.
