my father owns a heating and A/C company in Utah. He pays his so called "best installer" 21 bucks an hour. I think the next closest guy is at 19.50. a few guys at 17. all of them have full benefits. Helpers are making 11 dollars for 1 year experience and they make more as they get more experienced. If you are looking to be an HVAC Installer or even a technician Be patient with it, your not going to be making the big bucks over night. Its taken me 6 years (full time) to get to 18 dollars starting at $6.50.

not sure about Utah's sheetmatels workers union but in Bakersfield CA, out journey men's wage is around $34.00 a hr. HVAC is out strongest work of scope but our work of scope ranges widely, from metal roof installations, roof couping, arcitectule metal, duct fabrication... the list goes on. We have to knowledgeable on all of these. If not we can easily be replaced with some one who does. I'm still I'm my apprenticeship, but after 4 years my current wage is $27.69, w/ full benefits and retirement. Unions are great but you cant just be a average joe to succeed in one, you have to be really well rounded. And be able to perform many task.
