Typical cars and trucks cover a wide range. There are a lot of variables. Aside from the difference in size, added accessories, like power seats, air conditioning, and safety equipment, add weight to the vehicle, as do features like 4WD and AWD. So, for instance, a Chevy Malibu with all the options is likely to weigh a few hundred pounds more than a base model with no options. And luxury cars, that come with a large number of amenities, can weight considerably more than a similar budget-minded automobile. So a Cadillac CTS weighs quite a bit more than a base Malibu. And an all-wheel-drive CTS tips the scale even more.

Also, as more features have been added over the years, and manufacturers have been required to meet increasing government regulations for safety and emissions, similar sized vehicles have gotten heavier. For instance, a very small car, like an original Honda CRX or VW Rabbit, might weigh only about 1800 lbs. A late 80's Honda Civic or VW Golf weighed about 2200 - 2400 lbs. Today's versions of those cars weigh more like 2700 - 2900 lbs. Something like a hybrid Civic would be at the top end of that scale, if not even heavier.

Current mid-size cars, like a Chevy Malibu or Toyota Camry, tend to fall in the 2800 - 3300 lb range, some getting even higher.

Large cars span an even wider range. A Buick Lesabre would be at the low end of the scale at about 3500 - 3600 lbs. Cadillacs easily get over two tons (4000 lbs). And an AWD Benz S-Class is past 4600 lbs.

Compact trucks, like a 4WD Ford Ranger, tend to be in the high 3000's. Large trucks, like the Chevy Tahoe, tend to hit 5300 lbs and up. A Cadillac Escalade ESV (Suburban length) is close to 5900 lbs. And a Hummer H2 is more than 6600 lbs.

So you can see, we've just spanned a range of 1800 - 6600 lbs, with cars and trucks you're likely to see on the road any day of the week. For specific models, there are a number of references available to you online. You can check the manufacturers' web sites and the web sites for the various car magazines, or even Consumer Reports, for info on new cars. For both new and used cars, a good used car site, like Edmunds, has a lot of useful information.
